plenum: a meeting of a deliberative assembly in which all members are present (wikipedia). one of the ambitions with this furniture project is to explore how social interaction can be promoted around a table through an enveloping of the gathered. at the same time plenum is a table where form and the strength of wood have been pushed to create a floating form – light, simple and yet utterly stable.

the formal concept is a build up of planes. there is no frame, no sub structure or supporting beams – the table simply folds itself around the gathered. the prototype has a free span of 1800 mm and seats 6 people. with the additional end tops mounted, the length is extended to 3100 mm and the table now seats 10 people.

the prototype was made in solid ash wood at the national workshop for art and design in copenhagen. the finger joints were milled on a 5-axis cnc milling machine. the project is currently being developed for production and will form a family of products comprising dining/working table, coffee table, bench and stool.
