for the newly built kindergarten drejens in danish town kolding by architect firm +m, the team of martin larsen, artist pernille priergaard worsøe and architect david garcia won the 1st price in a competition for the design of an installation designed to inspire children to engage themselves in imaginative play as well as to enable spatial experiences and reflections.

the superkegler installation is defined somewhere between design, art and architecture and consists of six elements, all sharing a conical shape, that through a play on orientation, proportion and scale gives each element its distinct character.

three of the elements are placed close together in the kindergarten section. they are large in scale, creating spaces within and around them thus inevitably creating social spatial experiences. in the nursery three smaller elements are placed at a distance from each other. the hope is that toddlers will be exited as they try to conquer the cones. superkegler was unveiled together with the new buildings in september 2009.

bio bio stool

2nd round of the bio bio research project aimed at designing and producing a functional prototype using the findings and materials from the project’s first phase.

the project was carried out in 2010, again in collaboration with textile designer karina nielsen rios. research partner was senior engineer tom løgstrup andersen from risø, the danish national laboratory for sustainable energy. design-intern henk hatzmann worked hard on all aspects of the project.

plenum

plenum: a meeting of a deliberative assembly in which all members are present (wikipedia). one of the ambitions with this furniture project is to explore how social interaction can be promoted around a table through an enveloping of the gathered. at the same time plenum is a table where form and the strength of wood have been pushed to create a floating form – light, simple and yet utterly stable.

the formal concept is a build up of planes. there is no frame, no sub structure or supporting beams – the table simply folds itself around the gathered. the prototype has a free span of 1800 mm and seats 6 people. with the additional end tops mounted, the length is extended to 3100 mm and the table now seats 10 people.

the prototype was made in solid ash wood at the national workshop for art and design in copenhagen. the finger joints were milled on a 5-axis cnc milling machine. the project is currently being developed for production and will form a family of products comprising dining/working table, coffee table, bench and stool.

from 2003 martin larsen has been affiliated as a freelance industrial designer as part of the research and development group for the architectural design firm art andersen, a copenhagen based company specialized in innovative daylight control and dynamic elements of architecture. a recent project he participated on was the organ door installation for the refurbished royal festival hall in london by architect firm allies and morrison. the project comprises a new enclosure of 18 motorized acoustic wall panels, each 6 meters high and 500 kg in weight. when organ music is part of a performance, the entire rear wall can be opened up, thus exposing the organ. martin larsen was part of the development team and delivered a complete production drawing package, as well as he was supervising the installation of the panels on site.

the reading lounge litteraturens plads has been designed with architect david garcia for the main library in the copenhagen borough of frederiksberg. the library finds itself in a situation, where many books are being lent, but where people spend less, if any time in the library itself, since the books can been found and reserved on the library’s web page. thus this project was carried out in close collaboration with the librarians that felt the need for a space, in which the visitor would be encouraged to stay in the library just a little longer and thereby maybe meet unexpected encounters with works or subjects. with the new reading lounge the library can curate the display of certain writers, subjects etc, as well as it can host readings and study groups in an environment that is utterly comfortable and informal, and yet away from home. furniture and cabinet making was exquisitely produced by danish furniture maker bo-ex.

bio bio is a research project on new natural composite materials for product design. the project is carried out in collaboration with danish textile designer karina nielsen rios and with senior engineer tom løgstrup andersen from risø, the danish national laboratory for sustainable energy. with the project, we are aiming at developing new materials that combine the brilliant mechanical properties of natural fibers with their tactile aesthetic qualities by casting a woven textile in a bio-polymer. the outcome of the first year of experimentation was exhibited at the biennial for design at the danish design museum trapholt over the summer of 2009. karina and martin were awarded a prize by the danish arts foundation for their work as well as they have received funding from the danish national bank’s fund for arts and design.

squash pavillon

squash pavilions for the urban landscape is a project carried out in collaboration with architect david garcia. the proposition of the project is to make use of those prominent, yet temporarily vacant areas always found in cities by placing portable squash pavilions.

the pavilions could stand for months as well they could be permanent installations that would celebrate sport by putting it on display. our proposal is a typology, which is found somewhere between building and product. a modular structure made of a kit of parts, that can be transported, put together, dismounted and stored with relative ease. at the same time the pavilion offers flexibility in size, making the available area suit other sports or events.

a feasibility study was made for the danish town vejle, for placing the squash court in one of the central squares of the town. the british engineering firm arup has conducted climate and environmental modelling to prove the usability of the pavilion during most climatic conditions experienced in the nordic countries. we would be delighted to take this project further with a city, company or organization.
